How Do I Know Which Washer to Use at a Laundromat?
Choosing the Right Washer at the Laundromat
Walking into a laundromat and finding five different sizes of washing machine can be confusing, especially if you’re new to the experience. But choosing the right machine is simpler than it looks once you understand a few key principles. This guide will have you loading the right machine confidently every time.
The Golden Rule: Machine Size Matches Load Size
The most important factor in choosing a washer is matching the machine’s capacity to the size of your load. Both overfilling and underfilling have consequences:
- Overfilling prevents clothes from tumbling freely, meaning detergent doesn’t distribute evenly and clothes don’t get properly clean. It also puts stress on the machine.
- Underfilling wastes money â you’re paying for a large machine when a smaller one would do the job just as well for less.
The ideal load fills the drum about three-quarters full, leaving space for clothes to move around freely during the wash.
Machine Sizes at Love Wash
Our machines come in several capacities:
- 8 kg: One person’s weekly laundry, a few days of a couple’s clothing, or a small batch of mixed items.
- 10 kg: A family’s weekly clothing load, or medium-sized blankets and towels.
- 14 kg: Large family loads, heavy bedding, or mixed bulky items.
- 18â20 kg: Doonas, king-size sets, sleeping bags, and heavy-duty bulk loads.
Choosing the Right Cycle
Beyond machine size, you’ll also choose a cycle. Here’s how to match the cycle to what you’re washing:
- Cold wash: Best for most everyday clothing, bright colours, and anything that might shrink. Energy-efficient and perfectly effective for lightly to moderately soiled items.
- Warm wash: Good for moderately soiled items, work clothes, and sports gear. Improves stain removal performance on tougher soils.
- Hot wash: Reserved for heavily soiled items, white linens, towels, and anything that needs sanitising. Kills bacteria and dust mites effectively.
- Delicate cycle: Low-agitation, gentle cycle for delicate fabrics, lingerie, and anything marked ‘gentle wash’ on the care label.
Reading Care Labels
When in doubt, check the care label inside the garment. The label will specify the maximum wash temperature and any cycle restrictions. A single line under the tub symbol means gentle cycle; two lines means extra gentle. No lines means any cycle is fine.
