How Much Laundry Detergent Should You Actually Use?
Introduction
Here’s a truth bomb: most people use 2-4 times more detergent than necessary. More soap doesn’t mean cleaner clothes – it actually makes things worse.
Why Too Much Detergent Is Bad
- Residue on clothes – Excess soap leaves clothes stiff and dull
- Skin irritation – Soap residue causes itching and rashes
- Machine damage – Buildup creates mold and bad smells
- Wasted money – Literally pouring money down the drain
- Environmental impact – More chemicals in waterways
The Right Amount
For Standard Machines:
- Light load: 1 tablespoon liquid / 1/2 scoop powder
- Medium load: 2 tablespoons / 1 scoop
- Large load: 3 tablespoons / 1.5 scoops
- Heavily soiled: Add max 1 extra tablespoon
For HE Machines:
Use about half the amounts above. HE machines use less water.
Ignore the Cap Lines!
Detergent manufacturers want you to use more. The “recommended” amount is marketing, not science.
