Introduction

That musty, mildew smell is one of the most stubborn laundry problems. Regular washing often doesn’t eliminate it because the bacteria causing the odor are resistant to standard detergent.

What Causes Musty Smell?

• Mold and mildew growth – From damp conditions
• Bacteria buildup – From body oils and sweat
• Leaving wet clothes in washer
• Not drying completely
• Dirty washing machine

Method 1: White Vinegar Soak

1. Fill basin with warm water
2. Add 1 cup white vinegar per gallon
3. Soak smelly items for 30-60 minutes
4. Wash as normal
5. Dry completely – preferably in sunlight

Method 2: Baking Soda Treatment

1. Add 1/2 cup baking soda to wash drum
2. Add clothes
3. Run normal wash cycle
4. Add 1/2 cup white vinegar to rinse (optional)
5. Dry immediately and completely

Method 3: Hot Water Kill

For whites and heat-safe items:

1. Check care labels
2. Wash in hottest water fabric allows
3. Add oxygen bleach (Napisan)
4. Run extra rinse
5. Dry on high heat or in sunlight

Preventing Musty Smell

• Never leave wet clothes in washer
• Dry completely before folding
• Clean washing machine monthly
• Leave washer door open between loads
• Don’t overstuff dryer

Special Case: Towels

• Wash towels separately
• Use less detergent
• Add vinegar to every towel wash
• Dry on high heat
• Hang to dry between uses
