Dirty sneakers look bad and can smell. But can you put them in the washing machine? It depends on the shoe type.

Can Your Sneakers Be Machine Washed?

Generally Safe:

• Canvas sneakers (Converse, Vans)
• Fabric running shoes
• Synthetic athletic shoes
• Mesh trainers

Never Machine Wash:

• Leather sneakers
• Suede shoes
• Shoes with embellishments
• Designer shoes with special finishes

Preparing Sneakers

1. Remove laces – Wash separately
2. Remove insoles – Hand wash these
3. Knock off loose dirt
4. Pre-treat stains
5. Scrub the soles with toothbrush

Machine Washing Steps

1. Use a mesh laundry bag or pillowcase
2. Add 4-6 old towels to balance load
3. Use cold water only
4. Select gentle/delicate cycle
5. Use half the normal detergent
6. Skip fabric softener

Drying Your Sneakers

Never put sneakers in the dryer!

1. Remove from bag immediately
2. Stuff with paper towels
3. Replace paper every few hours
4. Place in well-ventilated area
5. Avoid direct sunlight
6. Allow 24-48 hours to dry

Hand Washing Method

1. Fill basin with cool water and mild soap
2. Scrub gently in circular motions
3. Wipe with clean damp cloth
4. Stuff with paper and air dry
