Can I Bring My Kids to a Laundromat?
Bringing Children to the Laundromat: A Practical Guide
For parents without in-home laundry access, or those who simply prefer the efficiency of a laundromat, bringing kids along is often unavoidable. The good news is that with a little preparation, a laundromat visit with children can be smooth, safe, and even enjoyable. Here’s how to make it work.
Safety First
Laundromats have moving machines, hot surfaces, and chemicals — all of which require supervision around young children. Key safety rules:
- Keep young children close and within arm’s reach at all times
- Never allow children to touch machine control panels, doors, or load/unload machines themselves
- Keep children away from dryer areas when doors are open and machines are hot
- Keep detergents and cleaning products out of reach
- Don’t let children run or play near machines
Choose the Right Time
Avoid visiting during the busiest times (Saturday morning, Sunday afternoon) when the laundromat is crowded and less easy to supervise children in. Early weekday mornings or mid-week afternoons are quieter, give you more space, and mean your children aren’t navigating around other customers.
Bring Entertainment
A wash cycle takes 30–40 minutes and a drying cycle another 35–45 minutes. That’s up to 90 minutes to manage with children. Come prepared:
- Tablets or smartphones with downloaded shows or games (headphones for older kids)
- Books, colouring books, or small toys for younger children
- Snacks — hungry kids and waiting don’t mix well
- A favourite comfort item for younger children who get unsettled in unfamiliar environments
Involve Older Children
Children aged 7 and up can actively help with simple tasks: carrying a laundry bag, handing you items to load, pressing the start button (under supervision), or helping match socks during folding. Giving them a small job makes the visit more interesting and teaches practical life skills.
Love Wash and Family Visitors
Love Wash welcomes families at all our locations. Our premises are clean, well-lit, and laid out in a way that’s relatively easy to manage with children. We have comfortable seating in waiting areas and maintain a safe, well-supervised environment. If you have specific concerns about visiting with young children, our staff are happy to help you set up quickly so the visit is as smooth as possible.
The Bigger Picture
Many Love Wash regulars are parents who’ve made the laundromat visit part of the family routine. It becomes a predictable, manageable outing — the kids know what to expect, parents have it organised, and the laundry gets done efficiently. With practice, it’s genuinely not a big deal.
