Can I Leave My Laundry Unattended at a Laundromat?

Can You Step Away While Your Laundry Runs?

It’s one of the most common questions new laundromat users ask: can I leave my laundry running and come back when it’s done? The short answer is yes — briefly. The longer answer involves understanding laundromat etiquette, safety, and the practical realities of shared laundry spaces.

The General Rule: Stay Close

Most laundromat users agree on a simple principle: you should be present, or nearby, during your wash cycle, and you must return promptly when your machine finishes. A brief absence — running to a nearby shop, grabbing a coffee, or sitting outside — is generally fine and widely accepted. Disappearing for several hours is not.

Why Timing Matters

When your wash finishes and you’re not there to move your load to a dryer, your wet laundry sits in the machine. This prevents other customers from using that washer. In a busy laundromat, this is genuinely frustrating for others waiting. It’s also not great for your clothes — sitting in a wet machine for an extended period can lead to mildew smells.

Most laundromats, including Love Wash locations, operate on an informal courtesy window of around 10 minutes after a cycle completes. After that, another customer may politely move your items to a folding table so they can use the machine.

What About Theft?

Laundry theft is relatively uncommon but not unheard of. At Love Wash, all our locations are monitored with CCTV and are well-lit, which significantly deters any opportunistic behaviour. Our staff presence during business hours adds another layer of security.

That said, common sense applies: don’t leave valuable items like wallets, keys, or electronics with your laundry. Leave only the clothes, and you’ll rarely have any issues.

Tips for Managing Your Time Away

Overnight or Extended Absences

Never leave laundry overnight or when the laundromat is closing. This is disrespectful to staff, other customers, and creates security concerns. If you can’t complete your laundry visit in one sitting, plan to return another day when you have enough time.

The Bottom Line

Using a laundromat responsibly means being present for the key moments — loading, moving to the dryer, and collecting your finished items. The in-between time is yours to use as you like. With Love Wash’s convenient Sydney locations and app-based machine monitoring, managing your laundromat visit around your schedule has never been easier.
