What Are the Unspoken Rules of Laundromats?

The Unofficial Code of the Laundromat

Laundromats are shared community spaces, and like any shared space, they run smoothly when everyone follows a few unwritten rules. These aren’t posted on signs, and nobody will explicitly tell you about them — but experienced laundromat users know them instinctively. Understanding laundromat etiquette makes your visit better and helps create a pleasant environment for everyone.

Don’t Leave Your Laundry Unattended for Too Long

It’s fine to step out briefly while your laundry is running — grab a coffee, do some grocery shopping, walk the dog. But you should return promptly when your cycle finishes. A good rule of thumb: be back within 10 minutes of your machine completing. Leaving wet laundry sitting in a finished machine for 30 minutes or more is one of the most common laundromat frustrations. Other customers need those machines.

If Someone’s Laundry Is Holding Up a Machine, Handle It Gently

If you arrive to find finished laundry sitting in a machine you need, it’s generally acceptable to move it to a nearby folding table or basket — gently and respectfully. Never leave items on the floor or handle them roughly. Most experienced laundromat users understand this will happen occasionally and won’t take offence if their items are moved with care.

Don’t Use More Machines Than You Need

During busy periods, try to consolidate your loads. If you can fit everything into two machines instead of three, do it. This isn’t about the money — it’s about making sure other customers aren’t left waiting for a machine to free up while you’re running a nearly-empty load.

Keep Your Space Tidy

Laundromats provide trolleys, carts, and folding tables for everyone’s use. Use what you need, but return items when you’re done. Don’t spread your belongings across three folding tables when you only need one. And clean up any spilled detergent or lint from surfaces — it takes 10 seconds and makes a big difference.

Volume on Devices

If you’re watching something on your phone or listening to music while you wait, use headphones. Other customers may be reading, working, or simply enjoying some quiet time. The laundromat is a shared space, not a living room.

Respect the Vending Machines and Common Areas

If the vending machine gives you trouble, let a staff member know — don’t hit or shake it. The same goes for machines: if something isn’t working correctly, report it rather than forcing it or leaving it for the next customer to deal with.

First Come, First Served

If you’re waiting for a specific machine (like an extra-large washer for your doona), wait your turn. Don’t watch someone else’s machine finish, then load it up before the owner has had a chance to come back. A brief wait is worth maintaining the goodwill of the space.
