Washing Delicates at a Laundromat: What You Need to Know

Silk blouses, lace lingerie, cashmere jumpers, embroidered garments — delicate items require more careful handling than a standard cotton t-shirt. Many people assume you can’t safely wash delicates at a laundromat, but with the right settings and technique, commercial machines can handle your most sensitive pieces perfectly well. Here’s how.

First: Read the Care Label

Before anything else, check the care label. Items marked ‘dry clean only’ should go to a dry cleaner — laundromats (self-service or otherwise) are not the right venue for these. Items marked ‘hand wash’ can sometimes be washed on a very gentle machine cycle, but proceed carefully and at your own risk.

Items marked ‘gentle’ or ‘delicate’ cycle are perfectly safe for a well-maintained commercial machine on the appropriate setting.

Use a Mesh Laundry Bag

For lace, lingerie, bras, items with beading or embellishments, thin knitwear, and anything prone to snagging, place the item in a mesh laundry bag before loading it into the machine. The mesh bag prevents tangling, protects delicate construction from mechanical agitation, and stops items from catching on other laundry.

Select the Delicate or Gentle Cycle

Modern commercial machines at Love Wash have a delicate cycle specifically designed for fragile items. This cycle uses:

Always select the delicate cycle for silk, lace, light knits, and embellished garments.

Use a Gentle Detergent

Standard laundry detergents can be too harsh for delicate fabrics. Use a gentle or delicate-specific liquid detergent. Avoid powder detergents for delicates as they may not fully dissolve and can leave residue on fine fabrics. Use a smaller amount than you would for a standard load.

Air Dry When Possible

Many delicate items shouldn’t go in the dryer at all — heat can shrink natural fibres, melt synthetic details, and warp the structure of bras and structured garments. If possible, remove delicate items from the machine after washing and take them home to air dry flat or on a hanger.

If you must use the dryer, select the lowest heat setting and check items frequently — remove them as soon as they’re dry rather than letting them sit in heat.

What to Wash Together

Wash delicates together in a separate machine from heavier items. Don’t combine silk with denim — the heavier items will abrade the delicates during the cycle. A dedicated delicates load is the safest approach.
