Can I Use My Own Detergent at a Self Service Laundromat?
Using Your Own Detergent at a Laundromat
Absolutely — bringing your own detergent to a self-service laundromat is not only permitted, it’s encouraged. You’ll save money compared to vending machine products, you can use your preferred brand, and you have full control over exactly what goes into your wash. Here’s everything you need to know.
Why Bring Your Own?
- Cost savings: Vending machine sachets are convenient but priced for convenience. A large bottle of liquid detergent from the supermarket costs significantly less per dose.
- Your preferred brand: If you use a specific detergent for sensitive skin, allergies, or fabric preferences, bringing your own ensures consistency.
- Correct dosage control: You can measure exactly the right amount for your load size, rather than using a pre-packaged quantity that may be more or less than ideal.
- Specialty products: If you use delicate wash liquids, wool wash, or sports-specific detergents, these aren’t available in vending machines.
What Types of Detergent Work Best?
All standard laundry detergent formats work in commercial machines:
- Liquid detergent: Most popular for laundromats. Dissolves quickly, easy to measure, suitable for all temperatures. Pour into the detergent drawer.
- Washing pods/capsules: The simplest option. Drop directly into the drum before loading clothes. No measuring required.
- Powder detergent: Works well but ensure it dissolves fully before the cycle starts, particularly in cold water. Add to the detergent drawer and allow the initial fill water to mix it through.
How Much to Bring
Bring enough for all your loads. If you’re doing three loads, bring a bottle with at least three doses remaining. It’s worth having a small bottle dedicated to laundromat visits so you’re never caught without. Many customers keep a small travel-size bottle packed in their laundry bag permanently.
Can I Bring Fabric Softener and Other Products?
Yes. Any laundry product you’d normally use at home can be brought to Love Wash. Fabric softener goes in the softener compartment of the machine drawer (usually marked with a flower icon). Stain removers can be applied directly to items before loading. Dryer sheets can go directly in the dryer drum.
Love Wash Vending Machines as Backup
If you forget your detergent or run out mid-visit, Love Wash’s vending machines stock a range of products including standard detergent sachets, fabric softener, and stain removers. They’re priced for single-use convenience and are always available as a backup.
