How to Prevent Laundry Theft
Practical Steps to Prevent Laundry Theft
Laundry theft is uncommon at well-run laundromats, but it’s not impossible. The good news is that a few simple habits dramatically reduce the risk. Here’s how to protect your laundry at any laundromat, including Love Wash.
Stay Present at Key Moments
Theft most commonly occurs during the transition between machines — when finished laundry sits in a completed washer or dryer. Be present when your machines finish. Set phone alarms for cycle completion times so you’re at the machine promptly. The window when unattended laundry is most vulnerable is those 15–20 minutes after a cycle ends.
Choose a Well-Monitored Laundromat
CCTV coverage is one of the most effective deterrents to opportunistic theft. Love Wash maintains comprehensive camera coverage at all four locations. The presence of staff during business hours adds another layer. When theft does occur and is reported, our CCTV footage is available to assist with identification.
Use a Distinctive Laundry Bag
A bright, distinctive laundry bag makes your possessions identifiable and less likely to be confused with or mistaken for someone else’s items. It also means that if your bag is moved, you’ll spot it easily across the laundromat.
Don’t Leave Valuables with Your Laundry
Wallets, keys, and electronics should never be left with your laundry. Keep them with you at all times. The risk of theft increases significantly when visible valuables are present alongside unattended clothing.
Keep Your Load Together
When moving laundry from washer to dryer, move the complete load in one trip if possible. Items left momentarily in a machine while you go back and forth are vulnerable. Use a laundry trolley or large basket to move everything in one go.
Know Your Laundromat’s Policy
Ask about the laundromat’s policy on found items and theft reporting. At Love Wash, we collect found items and hold them at each location for two weeks. If you suspect theft, we take reports seriously and involve CCTV review where relevant.
The Practical Reality
For the vast majority of Love Wash customers, laundry theft is never an issue they encounter. Our locations attract a regular community of customers who are simply there to do their laundry — the environment is genuinely safe and well-monitored. These tips are sensible habits rather than urgent warnings.
