Laundromat Etiquette for Busy Days
Navigating Busy Laundromat Days: Etiquette Tips
Saturday mornings. The day before school holidays end. The first weekend of the month. These are the times when laundromats fill up and machine availability becomes a real-time competition. How you behave during these peak periods reflects on you as a customer and significantly affects the experience of everyone else. Here’s how to be a considerate laundromat neighbour when it’s busy.
Don’t Save Machines You’re Not Ready to Use
Placing items on top of an available machine to ‘save’ it while you unload other machines or sort your laundry is considered bad form during busy periods. If you’re not immediately loading a machine, other customers waiting should have access to it. Load as quickly as possible and let machines be available until you’re actually ready to use them.
Consolidate Your Loads
During peak times, consider whether you can fit two loads into one larger machine rather than using two smaller ones. Other customers are waiting for machines. Using a 14 kg machine for what could reasonably be a single load is a small act of consideration that makes a real difference when the place is busy.
Be Ready to Move Immediately
On busy days, other customers are watching machine timers. When your machine finishes, be ready to move your laundry to a dryer immediately — not in 20 minutes, not after you finish your coffee. Be present and prompt. If you need to be away when your machine finishes, let staff know so they can assist with the transfer.
Use the Folding Tables Quickly
On busy days, folding table space is at a premium. Fold efficiently, take only the space you need, and move on as soon as your folding is done. Don’t use the folding area as a waiting space while other loads are running.
Keep Volume Down
Busy laundromats are already noisy. Be considerate about phone calls, music, and conversations. What feels normal volume to you may be intrusive to the person sitting next to you trying to work or read during their wait.
Patience is a Virtue
Sometimes you’ll need to wait. Someone finishes before you, but there’s a delay moving their laundry — be patient for a reasonable window before approaching staff. Most people are doing their best, and a calm, courteous response to minor inconveniences creates a far more pleasant environment for everyone.
At Love Wash, our staff are present during peak hours specifically to help manage machine availability and resolve any issues promptly. Don’t hesitate to ask for help.
