How Clean Are Laundromat Machines Really?
Are Laundromat Machines Clean and Hygienic?
It’s one of the first questions first-time laundromat users ask, and it’s completely understandable: if dozens of people use these machines every day, how clean can they really be? The answer might surprise you — well-maintained commercial laundromat machines are often significantly cleaner than home washers. Here’s why, and what to look for when choosing a laundromat.
Why Commercial Machines Can Be Cleaner Than Home Washers
Home washing machines have a problem that few people think about: they’re rarely cleaned themselves. The drum, rubber door seal, detergent drawer, and internal pipes collect soap residue, limescale, bacteria, and mildew over months and years. Many people never run a cleaning cycle on their home washer.
Commercial laundromat machines, by contrast, are subject to regular maintenance and cleaning schedules — at least in well-run laundromats. The continuous high-volume use and regular hot-water cycles mean machines rarely sit damp for extended periods (a primary cause of mould growth in home washers).
What Good Laundromat Hygiene Looks Like
A clean, well-maintained laundromat will have:
- Drum interiors that are dry and odour-free between uses
- Clean door seals with no visible mildew or residue buildup
- Regular professional maintenance and descaling
- Clean lint traps in dryers (checked and emptied regularly)
- Visible cleaning schedules posted or available on request
- Staff who wipe down machine exteriors regularly
The Hot Water Advantage
Washing machines don’t technically get ‘dirty’ from laundry the way you might imagine — the process of washing is essentially self-cleaning for the drum. High-temperature cycles (60°C and above) effectively kill bacteria and pathogens. Any residue from the previous load is flushed away with the next wash cycle’s initial fill.
Cold washes are less effective at sanitising, but the rinse and drain process still flushes the drum thoroughly between uses.

Tips for Peace of Mind
- Run a hot cycle (60°C+) for items you want sanitised
- Use a cup of white vinegar in the softener compartment as a natural sanitiser and deodoriser
- Inspect the door seal before loading — it should be clean and dry
- If a machine smells off, choose a different one and notify staff
Well-managed laundromats are clean, safe, and hygienic places to do your laundry. The key is choosing the right one — and at Love Wash, we make that an easy choice.
