What If a Machine Breaks While I Am Using It?
What to Do If a Laundromat Machine Breaks Down
It doesn’t happen often at well-maintained laundromats, but machines occasionally malfunction. A washer might stop mid-cycle, a dryer might run but not produce heat, or a machine might display an error code you don’t recognise. Here’s exactly what to do if it happens to you at Love Wash.
Step 1: Don’t Force It
If a machine stops working unexpectedly, don’t try to force it open or restart it repeatedly. Modern commercial machines have safety locks that prevent the door from being opened mid-cycle for safety reasons. Forcing the door or hitting the machine can make the situation worse and may cause injury.
Step 2: Note the Machine Number and Error Code
Every machine at Love Wash has a clearly visible machine number displayed on it. If an error code appears on the screen, note it down. This information helps our staff or technicians diagnose and fix the problem quickly.
Step 3: Contact Staff Immediately
All Love Wash locations have staff available during operating hours. Notify a staff member immediately. They have the tools and access to reset machines, open door locks, and assess whether the machine can be restarted or if your laundry needs to be transferred.
If you’re visiting a 24-hour laundromat outside staffed hours, look for an emergency contact number displayed on the premises or on the machine itself.
Step 4: Expect a Refund or Credit
If a machine fails after you’ve paid and your laundry hasn’t completed its cycle, you’re entitled to a refund or credit. At Love Wash, our policy is to refund the payment for any failed cycle. Please ask our staff to process this — we won’t require you to chase it.
Step 5: Transfer Your Laundry If Needed
Staff will help you transfer wet laundry to a working machine. Bring a bag or basket, or use one of our laundry trolleys. Laundry that was partway through a wash cycle when a machine failed should be rewashed rather than moved directly to the dryer.
Preventing Machine Issues
You can reduce the chance of triggering a machine fault by:
- Not overloading the drum
- Checking pockets for coins, keys, or other items before loading
- Using the correct amount of detergent (excess suds can trigger overflow sensors)
- Selecting appropriate cycle settings for your load type
Love Wash’s Maintenance Commitment
Our machines undergo regular preventive maintenance and servicing to minimise the chance of breakdowns. When a fault is reported, we aim to have it assessed and resolved within 24 hours. A machine that can’t be quickly fixed is taken out of service and clearly marked until it’s repaired — we won’t leave a faulty machine available for customers to use.
Machine faults are an exception at Love Wash, not the rule. But when they happen, we’ve got a process to make sure you’re taken care of.
