Stain Removal Before Using a Laundromat
Pre-Treating Stains Before Your Laundromat Visit
The best time to treat a stain is as soon as it happens. The longer a stain sits, the more it sets into fabric fibres and the harder it becomes to remove. Even if you can’t do laundry immediately, treating the stain first gives you the best chance of full removal when you do visit Love Wash.
General Stain Removal Principles
- Act quickly: Fresh stains are dramatically easier to remove than dried, set ones
- Blot, don’t rub: Rubbing a stain pushes it deeper into fibres and spreads it. Blot gently from the outside in to lift the stain out.
- Cold water first: For most stains, cold water is better for initial treatment than hot. Hot water can set protein-based stains (blood, dairy, egg) permanently.
- Check fabric care labels: Some fabrics need specialist treatment. When in doubt, test any product on an inconspicuous area first.
Common Stains and How to Treat Them
Coffee and Tea
Rinse immediately with cold water. Apply liquid detergent directly and work in gently. Leave for a few minutes, then rinse again before washing normally at Love Wash.
Red Wine
Blot up as much liquid as possible. Cover with table salt to absorb remaining liquid. Rinse with cold water. Apply stain remover product or liquid detergent and allow to work before washing.
Blood
Cold water only — never hot. Rinse thoroughly with cold water while the stain is fresh. For dried blood, soak in cold water with a small amount of laundry detergent before washing. Hydrogen peroxide works well on white fabrics only.
Grass
Apply liquid detergent directly to the stain and work it in with your fingertips. Leave for at least 10 minutes before washing on a normal cycle.
Oil and Grease
Absorb excess oil with paper towel. Apply dish soap (like Fairy) or a dedicated degreaser directly to the stain. Work in gently. Leave for 15–30 minutes before washing in warm water.
Ink
Apply rubbing alcohol or hand sanitiser to the stain and blot repeatedly. Rinse, apply liquid detergent, and wash in the warmest water safe for the fabric.
Stain Remover Products
Love Wash vending machines stock stain remover sprays and pens if you arrive at the laundromat and notice a stain you haven’t yet treated. Apply before loading into the machine, not after — a wash without pre-treatment will clean the stain but may not remove it entirely, and the heat of the dryer can then set it permanently.
Bring a stain pen in your dedicated laundry kit for on-the-spot treatment at any time.
